Don’t be fooled by cheap imported imitations made from Chinese Fir. Chinese Fir is not resistant to rot and infestation, and they must be fumigated before even entering our country. Even with that, there is no guarantee that bugs and eggs have been destroyed. Do we really want to introduce this threat to our environment? Chinese Fir is also inferior in its strength and durability. On average, furniture made from Chinese Fir will last between 1-3 years. A piece of log furniture made from Northern White Cedar can last 10-20 years.

You can finish this piece with a quality penetrating oil finish, or leave it alone to weather to a silvery gray color. Many, or most of the logs will have cracks. These cracks are called checks. Checking occurs when the logs dry and the cells shrink causing the wood to split. This does not weaken the wood. Checking helps give cedar furniture its rustic beauty.
